New Portrait: Elizabeth Mumbet Freeman and Dolores Volk

Visitors to the site may have read Robert Shetterly´s blog post about being introduced to the story of Elizabeth "Mumbet" Freeman by a woman named Dolores Volk. Volk sent Shetterly an email after seeing a set of AWTT portraits on display at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Only one image of Freeman, who was born in the 18th century and died in the 19th century before the Civil War, seems to exist. So Shetterly, departing from his usual style, decided to paint Dolores Volk presenting or introducing us, the viewers, to the image and quote of Elizabeth Freeman.  The portrait was just completed and has been uploaded to the site today. It can be seen here together with Freeman´s powerful quote:

"Any time, any time while I was a slave, if one minute’s freedom had been offered to me, and I had been told I must die at the end of that minute, I would have taken it -- just to stand one minute on God’s airth a free woman -- I would."
