11/04/08 New college curriculum reflects values of portraits The University of Southern Maine at Lewiston/Auburn has designed its required curriculum for all students around the question ( from Leo Tolstoy) "How, then, Shall We Live?" The curricular themes are Democracy, Sustainability, Justice and Difference. The important threads are ethical awareness, social responsibility, and civic engagement. The writers of the curriculum have drawn heavily on the words, lives & values of the people in the Americans Who Tell the Truth portraits. Read the curriculum at www.usm.maine.edu/lac/commoncore/ Another USM site that contains power points for teachers about the portraits can be found at: http://www.usm.maine.edu/lac/art/shetterly/educators.html Top

09/18/09 Great additons to site for Students an Teachers. Michele Hemenway from Louisville, our education consultant, has re-written our curriculum & added an education blog. We think these are now terrific resources for teachers and students in connection with the portraits. A description of what's available is below: • AWTTT Curriculum area includes: • The original basic curriculum overview for use of the portraits with a political forum as a potential outcome. A template to request an exhibit, speaking engagement with Rob Shetterly or a PD workshop for teachers. • A “downloadable “ manual that includes areas of curriculum in which the portraits can fit readily, suggestions for resources, activities and lesson plans • A developmental chart to help support using ideas from AWTTT curriculum in an age appropriate manner • A short study of the foundational aspect of compassionate action as it relates to the portraits for middle and high school students • A section where artistic work and other examples of how schools have used the portraits are shared. • Related resources and curricula BLOG : Being Who We Want Our Children to Become • Using current events, a daily posting is listed related to the portraits and connected issues that offers a “Moment of Truth “ for the day. • Use the blog entries for a short discussion, a simple response in a journal entry for the day, a more in-depth conversation or as part of an overall study. • Blog readers can share responses by emailing : michyh@blellsouth.net and entering BLOG in the subject line. • Blog entries will be also featured on FACEBOOK site where comments can be posted by readers. If you look at page 6 of the portraits, 7 of those people have the statements up -- including Lily Yeh, Diane Wilson, Hal Crowther, Natasha Mayers, Ann Wright, Cindy Sheehan, and Bruce Gagnon. Top

02/15/10 Join the Americans Who Tell the Truth Facebook page! A couple of years after the University of Tennesee hosted many of the women's portraits from this collection to honor National Women's month, some students there set up a Facebook page for AWTTT. I'm not a tech savvy person & do not myself have a Facebook page. But I've recently become aware how many people use it & how much traffic it directs to this website. Take a look. Join up. And have a conversation there about the portraits & the issues. Rob Top
