On March 28, 2013, Rob Shetterly´s portrait of Dolores Volk and Elizabeth "Mumbet" Freeman will be unveiled at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. This portrait is different from the other portraits in the Americans Who Tell the Truth series. Volk brought "Mumbet" Freeman to Shetterly´s attention when she saw a show of his portraits at Miami University where she works as a custodian. Why isn´t "Mumbet" Freeman in your series? she asked. When Shetterly read about Freeman he decided that she should be one of the "Models of Courageous Citizenship" in the series. But there was only one image of her in existence, a simple painting made in the late 18th or early 19th century. So, Shetterly decided to paint Volk holding this original portrait of Freeman, reminding us all of Freeman´s important place in American history.
The event will begin with a reception at 4:15 pm. The portrait unveiling will take place between 5:15 and 6:30 pm and a "meet and greet" with the artist, Shetterly, will run from 6:30 to 7:30.
The event is open to the general public.
Dolores Volk will be in attendance.
