It is in this book that Du Bois develops the concepts of "double consciousness" and "the veil" to describe the experience of being Black in America. This article, posted on the American Studies Department website at the University of Virginia, discusses the meaning of these terms, stating: "The implication and connotation of these words were far-reaching because not only did it succinctly describe the plight of being Black and American then, it rings true to the core and essence of what it means to still be Black and American today."
