Truth Tellers: An Artist’s Journey to Uphold our Founding Ideals“What makes a great American? For artist and activist Robert Shetterly, it’s a citizen with the ‘moral courage to confront issues of social, environmental, and economic fairness.’ Shetterly has painted 250 portraits of Americans past and present who exemplify these ideals, with their words displayed next to them in the background of the portraits. The resulting series has been exhibited throughout the United States for almost two decades, and this fall will be on display at the Museum of Art – DeLand.

“Shetterly says, ‘Americans Who Tell the Truth has tried to be a lantern that throws its light forward and back. Knowing the truth of the past’s struggles for justice is essential to seeing clearly the obstacles and possibilities in the future.'”

The Museum of Art – DeLand is a vital and interactive 501 (c) 3 non-profit visual arts museum enriching the community through its dedication to the collection, preservation, study, exhibition, and educational use of the fine arts.
